PEST LIBRARY / ANTS / FIELD ANT
Field ants are one of the larger-sized ants ranging in length from 4 to 8 mm. Their colours are known to be yellow, red, black or a combination of red and black.
They make their nests in lawns, gardens, fields, and parks. These relatively passive ants are sometimes mistaken for fire ants. While they do not sting, field ants will bite when disturbed and some possess the ability to spray formic acid so the bite can be painful. Side effects resulting from a bite are usually mild in nature and typically subside within an hour, but you should consult a medical expert if you feel any lingering symptoms.
Their most common food source is honeydew; a component obtained from insects such as aphids. They will also feed on other insects and meat.
Field ants do not usually invade homes. However, homeowners may come across ants hunting for food on decks or porches.
