PEST LIBRARY / ANTS / ODOROUS (HOUSE) ANT
Odorous house ants, sometimes called odorous ants, measure between 2.4 to 3.3 mm in length and possess dark brown or black bodies. They will nest both indoors and outdoors. Indoors, their colonies reside in well-hidden places such as under carpets, beneath floors or wall crevices. Outdoors, they follow a similar pattern, placing their nests beneath soil, mulch and under rocks.
The food consumed by house ants is based on their environment. When outdoors, they prefer sap from aphids and other feeding insects. Ants in the house will eat almost any type of food – meats, dairy products, pastries and vegetables just to name a few.
Odorous house ants develop from an egg to an adult typically within 34 to 83 days.
To perform your own ant control in house, baiting is the most reliable way to go. However, dealing with an ant infestation can be tricky if you are unsure whether the colony will respond better to the use of sugar-based baits over protein-based ones or vice versa. To effectively deal with an ant infestation in home, contact an exterminator for ants such as Environmental Pest Control. An experienced ant exterminator will know what kills ants and use the appropriate ant killer. Depending on your situation, pet safe ant killer may also be an option.
