PEST LIBRARY / COCKROACHES / BROWN BANDED ROACH
Brown banded cockroaches are light brown in colour and can grow to be 11 to 14.5 mm in length. These roaches have light tan bands that are present along the wings of the adult and across the body of the young. Adult males are capable of flying.
These cockroaches' nest in dry and very warm areas and preferably higher up locations than most other roach species. Preferred living areas include ceilings, attics, closets and pantries, behind wall decorations or loose wallpaper and in or around major appliances. While primarily nocturnal, they may be found searching for food during the day.
While brown-banded cockroaches have a preference for materials with a higher starch content, such as book bindings or stamps, since they are scavengers, they will eat just about anything.
Brown-banded cockroaches pose a number of health risks. These roaches have been found to spread over 30 kinds of harmful bacteria through their legs and bodies, which they then transmit onto food and food surfaces.
Females will produce approximately 14 egg capsules, each of which contains 10 to 18 eggs. The time needed for the young to reach maturity greatly depends on environmental conditions. Ideal conditions can produce a fully grown within three months.
Prevention starts with good sanitation practices. Clean up food spills immediately, keep food in the refrigerator or tightly sealed containers, vacuum often and eliminate clutter around the house.
